When you attempt to create an admin user and see an error stating that the user already exists, there are several possible solutions depending on the situation.
In all cases, we recommend that you discuss the situation with the user you are attempting to create an account for. They will likely know about any other accounts they already have for using EdReady.
The most common scenarios are:
- Admin/Teacher in Texas College Bridge or North Carolina DPI (using *.nrocportal.org).
- Admin/Teacher in an EdReady site such as Houston CC (hcc.edready.org) or Dallas ISD (disd.edready.org).
- Student account in the public-use site, EdReady.org, which some teachers have used to trial the experience EdReady for themselves or to demo EdReady for students.
- Rarely, a teacher may have their own student account from being a student at an institution that uses EdReady.
Possible Solutions
The first two options can be undertaken without the support of EdReady staff. The second two options require reaching out to EdReady staff for assistance.
Use an alternate email address.
If the user you are creating wants or needs to keep the original account, then they can use an alternate email address for the new account. It can be a personal email address, but it must be a real email address where they can receive system emails, such as password resets. Gmail users (personal and institutional) can use Gmail+ variants See details HERE and look for the section called "Create variations of your email address").
Ask their IT team to create an additional school email address.
If the user does not have an alternate email address, they can ask their IT team for help to create an additional school address or alias.
Delete the old EdReady account.
If the user wants to delete their unused EdReady account to free up the email address for use on the new account, then THE USER must contact support at https://support.edready.org. We can only delete accounts when requested by the account owner and we will verify their email address.
Modify the email address on the old account.
We can modify the email address on the unwanted account or replace it with a completely different email address, such as a personal address. This will free up the email address for use on the new account. This must be undertaken by EdReady staff, but does not require the user to contact us because we are preserving their account data.
Notes
The EdReady ecosystem consists of hundreds of different custom EdReady sites (such as myschool.edready.org) and over a million individual user accounts.
User accounts are uniquely identified by their email address.
Each new user must be completely unique across the entire ecosystem. There cannot be a matching email address in any other EdReady site, regardless of role (student or admin).
EdReady does not recognize users by their first and last names or any other data. So the system will never be confused by similar email addresses or names.
EdReady treats each user as a unique individual and makes no connection between them.
A typo in the email address will create a separate and unique user with no indication that they are "related to" the user with the correct email address.
